Venezuela have claimed their first ever victory over Brazil when they shocked the five times world champions 2-0 in a friendly international match.
Giancarlo Maldonado, who plays for Atlante of Mexico, opened the scoring in the sixth minute on Friday, and Ronald Vargas made it 2-0 for Venezuela in the 44th.
Venezuela had never beaten Brazil in 17 previous encounters at the national level.
This duel, played before a crowd of 54,045 fans at Gilette Stadium, was part of both teams' preparation for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Luck was also not on Brazil`s side, as a Diego bicycle hit the post and Adriano`s back-heel went inches wide.
Great credit must be given to the Venezuelan team, who defended well and scored two brilliant goals as Brazilian fans booed their own team and walked out before the end.
The loss also ended Brazil's 15-match unbeaten run, stretching just under a year. "We played badly," was all Brazilian coach Dunga had to comment.
Dunga has his work cut out for him days before two difficult major World Cup qualifiers one involving the world`s current No. 1: Argentina.
