Arch rivals Fluminense and Flamengo drew 2-2 in a hard fought game which saw the referee give out 15 yellow cards and three reds.
The red cards in the 'Fla-Flu' derby included one for Flamengo midfielder Diego Souza, who was dismissed immediately after scoring his side's late equaliser in a dramatic 2-2 draw.
Souza, who had already been booked, picked up a second yellow card when he climbed the fence around the pitch to celebrate with Flamengo supporters.
Earlier, Fluminense midfielder Romeu and Flamengo's Jonatas had also been sent off for second bookable offences in a match played in the industrial town of Volta Redonda due to the Maracana refurbishment.
Fluminense striker Tuta twice put his side ahead but Flamengo replied first with a Renato penalty and then with Diego Souza's 83rd minute shot which slipped under goalkeeper Kleber.
Fluminense stayed third in the table with 47 points from 27 games, three behind leaders Internacional, who won 2-1 at Fortaleza.
Flamengo stayed 17th, dangerously close to the relegation zone in the 22-team table.
