The suspension of the Brazilian domestic league throughout the World Cup brings a welcome break for most teams, none more so than Corinthians. Despite being crowned champions in 2005 they now find themselves hovering in the relegation zone 3rd from bottom. The Timäo began the season with a clear focus - The Copa Libertadores (which they have never won) and implemented a policy of resting key players before important games; they have so far failed to recover from their exit in the quarter finals.
Corinthians record in the Brasileiräo this year leaves a lot to be desired; three wins, seven losses, including four defeats on the trot under new coach Geninho. Considering Corinthians are yet to win, or even draw, under Geninho he is surprisingly up beat and is convinced things will be different after the Cup. “Corinthains will not remain in this situation! With such a strong team, and now this opportunity to try and restore the peace, its going to be hard to defeat Corinthians after the Cup. The break comes at a very important time for the team; we can work and make adjustments in peace. It comes at a time when the team needs a break.” He acknowledges certain weaknesses (namely a lack of confidence and problems around midfield and attack) but is certain these can, and will be overcome.
Geninho’s sentiments are echoed by the players; “We have 40 days to work hard and get ourselves out of this situation,” asserted Nilmar (Corinthian’s forward) following defeat to Flamengo on Sunday. Similarly winger Marcelo Mattos believes the time off and opportunity to train in peace will prove to be a turning point for the team, “We have to correct our errors.”
Corinthians players have been granted ten days leave with training recommencing on June 15th. With their next game not until July 12th this should provide ample time to correct mistakes and to try and restore confidence in their abilities.
Timäo will face Cruzeiro away on July 12th at 21:45 (local time).
