Round 33 – The results

Round 33 saw the São Paulo – Santos classico, the Botafogo –Fluminense Carioca derby and Inter take on Grêmio in Porto Alegre.

São Paulo emerged victorious in this weekend’s classico as they beat Santos one nil to preserve their lead at the top of the table. Mineiro hit home the winner in the 29th minute after a clever one-two with midfielder Lenilson.

Second-place Internacional kept their championship hopes alive beating fourth place Grêmio; a single goal by Iarley in the 64th minute was enough to secure victory. With only five matches remaining, Sao Paulo has 67 points, and Inter 62.

At the Marcana the Carioca derby ended Botafogo two – Fluminense nil, the later have now gone 11 games without a win and hover just above the relegation zone in 16th place. 17th place Ponte Preta lost two one to São Caetano away from home.

Meanwhile reigning champions Corinthians extended their winning streak to four matches beating last place Santa Cruz. The only goal of the game came in the first half as Marcelo Mattos converted a penalty after Roger was brought down in the area.

Struggling Palmeiras remain in 15th place after loosing four –two away from home to Paraná Clube. Despite the loss coach Jair Picerni praised his team’s performance but insisted that the Verdão must improve their defensive play if they are to avoid relegation.
