The season began with Brazilian dreams of another World Cup victory and another exciting Brazilian championship. Brazil may not have lifted the World Cup in Germany but the Brasileiro certainly lived up to expectations.
For much of the season last years champions Corinthians looked doomed to relegation. The merry-go-round of Coaches and player revolts certainly didn't help the Paulista's team spirit.
The exit of Tevez and Maschareno to England seemed to lift the team, who after spending much of the championship in the danger zone, finished a more respectable ninth.
But 2006 was to be the year São Paulo would dominate. Having won the World Club championship last December, got to the final of the Copa do Liberdores for the second year running and now won the Brazilian Championship. São Paulo can truly say they are a world class team worthy of the title of champions.
Internacional ended the competition with 69 points from 38 games to finish runners-up for the second year in a row.
Gremio and Santos took the other Brazilian places in the Libertadores along with Flamengo (finished 11th in the league), who won the Copa Brasil knockout tournament.
The golden boot went to Goiás Souza who struck 17 goals, 3 ahead of 2nd placed Schwenk of Figueirense.
The relegation places had already been settled with Ponte Preta, Sao Caetano, Fortaleza and Santa Cruz condemned to the drop.
They will be replaced next year by Atletico Mineiro, Sport Recife, Nautico and America-Natal, who were promoted from Serie B.
