After more than 45 days Corinthians’ players have finally broken their silence.
Corinthians ended their season on Sunday with a five-three victory over Juventude at the Pacaembu and celebrated by talking to the press for the first time since October 15th.
Speaking of their silence forward Amoroso revealed, “It was important, we don’t have anything against the press but they were judging us, trying to put us in the second division, putting pressure in the wrong way.”
The silence was supposed to end on November 16th but instead of the promised interviews waiting journalists were met with a group communication explaining that the silence would continue as a result of ‘untruths’ being spread by the media.
Clearly enjoying the chance to speak again midfielder Roger appeared upbeat as he explained, “From the situation that we were in earlier in the competition, in last place we have recuperated and finished the championship with dignity and respect for the Corinthians’ shirt.”
Roger and Amoroso were not the only ones speaking out over the past few days. Palmeiras’ veteran keeper Sergio has admitted that he expects to be heading to their arch-rivals at the Parque São Jorge in 2007.
According to the Folha de São Paulo no big buys are expected from Corinthians’ financial backers MSI but Sergio is likely to be one of the four or five reinforcements coach Emerson Leão will be permitted.
After 15 years with the Verdão Sergio announced, “For me the space {at Palmeiras} was small. I still don’t know where I will be going next year but there is a big chance I will be at Corinthians. There are a lot of things that have yet to be put right but I have already spoken a lot with Leão. We will have to see if Corinthians put in an offer.”
Other likely candidates for a move to the Timão, according to the Folha at least are São Caetano defender Gustavo and striker Jaílson who scored 17 goals in the Série B for Paulista de Jundiaí.
Globo has announced that Jaílson has already signed a two year contract and will begin training on January 3rd. They are also reporting that Sergio will sign by the end of the week and São Caetano winger Daniel will follow shortly.
