Hours after Cruzeiro ended their season with a three – one win over Botafogo Oswaldo de Oliveira announced he was standing down as coach.

The Minas side finished the championship in tenth place – enough to ensure qualification for next season’s Copa Sudamericana but not a much coveted Copa Libertadores place.

Oliveira put it simply, “It’s not in Cruzeiro’s interest to renew my contract . . . I’m not sore, on the contrary. I think it’s unfair - but that’s football.”

In the past Oliveira led Corinthians to both the national and FIFA World Club titles as well as coaching Vasco, Fluminense, São Paulo.

A replacement has yet to be announced.
