Nilmar will be sidelined for up to eight months because of a knee injury, his second serious knee ailment in less than a year.

The midfielder twisted his leg and ruptured ligaments in his left knee during Corinthians'3-0 loss to rival Palmeiras in the Sao Paulo state championship on Sunday. He will need surgery and is likely to miss from six-to-eight months, doctors told local media.

The 22-year-old striker missed most of last season because of a similar injury on his right knee in July, following another loss to Palmeiras.

He was playing in only his fifth match since recovering from the first knee injury.

Nilmar, who helped Brazil win the 2003 U-20 World Cup, helped Corinthians win the Brazilian league in 2005. He has scored 31 goals in 59 matches with the four-time national champion.
