Corinthians have appointed Paulo Cesar Carpegiani their new coach.
The move was announced via the club’s website on Sunday and Carpegiani is expected to be officially presented to the players and press this evening. He replaces Emrson Leão whose eight month spell as coach came to an end last week.
Despite having already signed a one year contract he will not officially take control until Thursday morning after Wednesday’s Copa Brasil fixture against Naútico, a club he once coach.
Caretaker manager José Augusto will remain in charge for that match.
Carpergiani’s career began in midfield for Internacional (PA) where he earned two Brazilian Championship winners’ medals; after seven years there he moved to Flamengo and added another to his collection.
Highlights of his coaching career include leading Paraguay to the second round of World Cup 98 and Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cups with Falmengo in 1981.
Carpegiani has been without a major coaching roll for the past 18 months but insists this will not hamper his work at the Parque São Jorge.
“If I was a player I would have great difficulty but the roll of a coach is tactical and you don’t ‘unlearn’ tactics, on the contrary you perfect them”
In a separate interview with Joven Pan Radio he stated, “I’m confident in my abilities as well as the potential of this great squad.
“I don’t see it as a challenge in the problematic sense . . . I know the difficulties but I’m calm and ready to work in order to get Corinthians back to the sort of form the fans expect and demand.”
A calm approach will be welcomed after the turbulent reign of Leão.
