Brazil played their last friendly match before a definitive World Cup squad is announced.
The game was as cold as the temperature in the Lokomotiv stadium, about minus twenty. In a very poor technical performance, Brazil managed to hold on for the victory 1-0 against a tough Russian team.
The game served at least for Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira to make tsome final tests before his ultimate squad decision.
In despite of the cold, hard ground conditions and poor technique, Brazil scored with their first chance. Roberto Carlos power shot from distance, was deflected by Ronaldo and the ball was in the net. Brazil 1-0. Russian goalkeeper Akinfeev had no reaction and claimed for a hand ball by Ronaldo.
After that, The Brazilian squad played in a slow rhythm and only had one real attacking play on 33 minutes with Adriano’s shot, but Akinfeev saved.
On 45 minutes, the Russians finally attacked, with Kerzhakov. His shot exploded on Rogério Ceni’s bar.
In the second half, Parreira began to make the substitutions; Ricardinho and Juan were replaced by Edmílson and Cris. But it seemed it was Russia who were taking the initiative to push forward, having 3 good opportunities in the first 15 minutes, all saved by Rogério Ceni.
In reaction, Parreira made 2 substitutions: Gustavo Nery and Fred replaced Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo. It almost had an immediate effect. Cicinho crossed and the Russian defenders were lost and almost scored an own goal.
Then Russia returned to control the game. Parreira removed Kaká and Emerson, replaced by Juninho and Gilberto Silva. But all those substitutions destroyed the previous tactics and Russia became even more dominating for the rest of the match.
On 32 minutes Kerzhakov again, and Rogério made a great save. 5 minutes later Arshavin dribbled Rogério and rolled back the ball, Kerzhakov shot, but Gustavo Nery saved just in the line. After that, Brazil just passed the ball foot by foot and waited for the final whistle.
